The Visitation as Biblical MysteryThis presentation will explore St. Francis de Sales’s particular interpretation of the Biblical mystery of the Visitation. While we often consider this mystery as only the encounter of Mary and Elizabeth, Francis’s approach is expansive: it embraces all the persons and events in the entire story so as to break open the Visitation as a relational, and specifically, a family mystery. Francis also invites us to participate in this mystery by responding to divine inspirations in our own lives, by receiving the Eucharist, and by practicing charity and humility, “the chief virtues which urged [Mary] to make this visitation.” | Fr. Joseph F. Chorpenning, O.S.F.S., is editorial director of Saint Joseph’s University Press in Philadelphia. He is also chairman and English-language member of the International Commission on Salesian Studies (ICSS), whose biannual newsletter he edits as well. His publications on Salesian themes include Francis de Sales, Sermon Texts on Saint Joseph in the Peregrina Translation Series (2000), and the edited volume Human Encounter in the Salesian Tradition: Collected Essays Commemorating the 4th Centenary of the Initial Encounter of St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane Frances de Chantal (2007). |
The Visitation as CommunitySaints Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal knew that the Visitation is not only a biblical story or a theological statement. It is also a “spirit” that comes alive in people as they relate to God and, especially, with one another. This talk will explore some of the many different ways that the relational mystery of the Visitation, which is at the heart of the Gospel, has been made real. Since the key to this realization is discovered in a “quality of heart,” the spirit of the Visitation can be incarnated in many lifestyles and by varied personalities. We will consider these diverse incarnations historically and in today’s everyday life. | Wendy M. Wright is Professor of Theology Creighton University and holds the John C. Kenefick Faculty Chair in the Humanities. Her Salesian themed publications include Bond of Perfection: Jeanne de Chantal and François de Sales; Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal: Letters of Spiritual Direction (with Péronne-Marie Thibert and Joseph F. Power), Francis de Sales: Introduction to the Devout Life and Treatise on the Love of God; Sacred Heart: Gateway to God; and Heart Speaks to Heart: the Salesian Spiritual Tradition. |
The Visitation as CommitmentThe mystery of the Visitation is the beginning of evangelization. Mary who is called, is now sent, and where does she arrive but among those who are waiting and longing for a visit from the saving God. The Gospel is immediately proclaimed, and those whose ears are touched by the Word, who are filled with the Spirit, become, in turn, those who proclaim Good News and Blessing. The whole passage in Luke becomes an icon for evangelization and education to the faith that then becomes a model for the apostolic community and the Church, Francis’s missionary apostolate in the Chablais, and Don Bosco’s ministry to youth who are poor and abandoned. | Joseph Boenzi, SDB is a Salesian of Don Bosco and faculty member at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Institute of Salesian Studies at Berkeley. He teaches courses in Salesian spirituality, Church History and Ecclesiology. Since 2005, Fr. Boenzi has been a Visiting Professor of Spiritual Theology at the School of Theology of the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome. His expertise and interest in St. Francis de Sales has made him a much requested speaker in everything Salesian. |
